Welcoming the Majestic Tiger
Feb 13 - Feb 14, 2010
Granville St, Downtown
Lantern Procession
On the eve of Lunar New Year, Vancouver's own new tradition of Lunar New Year celebration starts on Granville St. downtown Vancouver to welcome the year of Tiger. When night falls, a Lantern Procession organized by Public Dreams Society will take people on a magical journey. Members of the public are welcome to bring their own lanterns, DIY a lantern or take a Tiger hat lantern on site and join the moon walkers and light carriers in the parade winding through the twinkling lantern forest to the sound of live music. For these two days, an on-site lantern workshop will allow visitors to make their own lanterns.
Performances
As Lunar New Year is celebrated by many Asian countries, Welcoming the Majestic Tiger includes performances from many local Asian communities, such as drum dance from the Korean traditional celebrations. Do you know Korean lion mask dance is vastly different then the often seen Chinese Lion Dance? The first children Taiko ensemble in Canada will share the beat of unique and dynamic performing art of Taiko with the audience.
The highlight of the performance is the recently Grammy nominated Ten Drum Art Percussion Group from Taiwan. First established on spring of 2000, the name of the group comes from the Chinese character for “ten”, symbolizing the generation of powers from all directions and forming unity. Ten Drum aspired to create distinctive drumming arts for Taiwan and teach percussion locally to inspire people to value the art of traditional drumming and Taiwan can be internationally known as” Island of Drums” in the future. The young troupe of Ten Drum Art Percussion Group will introduce to the people of Vancouver the art of drumming raging from Lion Dancing to Taiwan’s aboriginal drumming culture.
(FREE!) Tiger Lantern Hat
A fun new way to carry your lantern is wearing it on your head! Made by the paper sculpture master Hung Hsin-Fu, these cute Tiger Lantern Hats outfitted with color changing LED lights will be free for public to pick up on site.
